The business problem
AMN set out to give readers a daily digital companion rather than another news app: its journalism made quicker to take in and easier to listen to, in the reader’s own language, alongside the information people check every day.
The starting point
AMN’s journalism reached readers through separate brands and formats: Annapurna Post in Nepali, The Annapurna Express in English, Radio Annapurna on air, and the printed paper.
Multimodal
5 ways to take in every story
Each reader chooses how: reading in full, skimming, listening, watching or searching.
Read
Full stories, a distraction-free reading mode and the complete e-paper.
Skim
An AI summary on every story, and Quick Reads.
Listen
A morning audio briefing of the day’s headlines, and read-aloud for any story.
Watch
Videos and swipeable web stories.
Find
Smart search across stories, topics and sources, and a feed that learns what each reader cares about.
How it works
From an editor’s publish to a reader’s language
AI runs once, when a story is published, so every version is ready before anyone opens it.
01
Editor publishes
A story is published from AMN’s newsroom.
02
AI prepares every version
Summaries, each language, audio and search embeddings, generated in parallel.
03
Quality check
Each AI output is validated before it is stored. Failures retry and never block the story.
Control point
04
Stored and cached
Prepared versions go to storage, cache and the content network.
05
Reader opens or listens
In their language, as the full story, a summary or audio.
The solution
- When an editor publishes, an event-driven pipeline prepares every AI version of the story ahead of time: summaries, versions in each language, audio and search embeddings.
- Every AI output passes an automated quality check before it is stored or shown, and a failed AI step is retried without holding up publication.
- Readers are served the prepared versions from cache and a content delivery network, rather than waiting while AI generates them.
- One app for iOS and Android that combines AMN’s news with the daily services around it, from market prices and the Nepali calendar to classifieds and civic issues.
In the app
Far more than news
The daily services around the journalism, in the same app.
